Getting paid to travel the world and see different sites – who wouldn’t want a career like that? Working in the aviation industry can open up a world of opportunity, but it isn’t for everyone. Over the next few posts, we’ll dig a little deeper and see if this career is a fit for you. Prepare for takeoff!
If you’ve ever been a passenger then you’ve probably seen what being a flight attendant pretty much looks like – from the outside. We greet passengers onto the plane, help stow bags, demonstrate what to do in emergency situations, hand you drinks, peanuts and smile as we wave goodbye once we’ve reached our destination. While the job is all of those things, it is so. Much. MORE. This post will cover just three.
1. Fun:
It’s probably safe to say that most flight attendants enjoy traveling. While the love of traveling should not be why you choose to become a flight attendant, it certainly is a major perk of the job. While working, we get to be tourists, foodies and more all while getting paid; and during our free time, we get to travel for free! Airline doesn’t fly to a specific destination? No worries! Most airlines have interline agreements that allow flight attendants to hop on ANY carrier, so being a flight attendant truly is a unique opportunity to get more out of life!
2. Safety Training:
Sometimes you’ll hear flight attendants say something like, “we are here primarily for your safety”, and they’re not lying. Flight attendants have to go through weeks, sometimes a month or more of training everyday (including the weekends). This is completed before they are hired as a flight attendant, and roughly 95% of that training period is spent on safety related materiel. Flight attendants have to be prepared for anything that may happen during flight. From delivering a baby to how to handle a terrorist, flight attendants are trained on it all.
3. Impacting Others:
There are so many opportunities to impact others, but how many of them allow you to do impact hundreds of people in one day? This job is rewarding in the fact that we can help so many people with more than just getting them to their destinations. Transporting 100 to 400+ passengers in a single day, gives flight attendants loads of opportunities to connect with others. We can react to the passenger who is wearing a “Bride” shirt or to the person who comes on the flight crying, and our reactions might just make that person’s day a little better. Additionally, depending on which company they work for, flight attendants have ample free time outside of work to do even more. Some companies even have groups of flight attendants that fly around the world to volunteer.
So, do any of these things pique your interest? Are you possibly considering joining the flight life? Do you know someone who would enjoy this lifestyle?
